Chill in the air
Last night our campsite sung with the sounds fo many animals. We were in a little campground where the coyotes were telling the dogs they were in their spot. But the dogs were telling the coyotes to back away, and the cows where saying you’re both idiots because our poop is everywhere so clearly it’s our home. Not to mention the little (hopefully) rascal walking around behind our tents.
The night was chilly, mid 30s, which stayed until the morning. Pack up was quick as we tried to stay warm, and hopped on the road to get going.
Our pace was steady and quick, and the road was hilly but smooth. Eventually it turned into a double road highway, but traffic was quite light, so nothing terribly crazy. We were super thrilled that the winds had died down, as yesterday was a full headwind draining our energy faster. It was brutal.
About four miles from Silver City. We had not one, but two trail angels stop off to check in on us. One was a fella who had checked on a water cache and was heading up to Doc Campbell’s to drop off some hiker packages, and the other was a lady we saw in the morning filling up the cache by our camp. It’s always nice to see such wonderful people supporting strangers they’ve never met. On behalf of all hikers, we love you! Definitely helps keep us alive and well (and avoiding drinking poopy water from cow pastures).
As we entered Silver City, we checked in and cleaned up a bit (a loosing battle already at only 9 days into the trek), then went to the gear shops to get some more fuel for the stretch ahead, which is fortunately only about two days. We’ve got way more food than we need as we planned to keep going passed SC, but at least our resupply at Docs won’t have to be too hefty.
After a delicious meal (lots of salad and veggies!), and a quick gander at the local co-op (which is a haven for anyone, and especially a hiker), I hopped on the phone with Lauren for a while before heading back to the room for a (little) bit of tv and then quickly off to bed. We plan to sleep in a whole hour and have a nice breakfast here before setting off for the day.
